Physics with Cosmic Neutrinos, Pev to Zev

چکیده
Neutrinos offer a particularly promising eye on the extreme Universe. Neutrinos are not attenuated by intervening radiation fields such as the Cosmic Microwave Background, and so they are messengers from the very distant and very young phase of the universe. Also, neutrinos are not deflected by cosmic magnetic fields, and so they should point to their sources. In addition, there are particle physics aspects of neutrinos which can be tested only with cosmic neutrino beams. After a brief overview of highest-energy cosmic ray data, and the present and proposed experiments which will perform neutrino astronomy, we discuss two particle physics aspects of neutrinos. They are possible long-lifetime decay of the neutrino, and a measurement of the neutrino-nucleon cross-section at a CMS energy orders of magnitude beyond what can be achieved with terrestrial accelerators. Measurement of an anomalously large neutrino cross-section would indicate new physics (e.g. low string-scale, extra dimensions, precocious unification), while a smaller than expected cross-section would reveal an aspect of QCD evolution. We then discuss aspects of neutrino-primary models for the extreme-energy (EE) cosmic ray data. Primary neutrinos in extant data are motivated by the directional clustering at EE reported by the AGASA experiment. We discuss the impact of the stronglyinteracting neutrino hypothesis on lower-energy physics via dispersion relations, the statistical significance of AGASA directional clustering, and the possible relevance of the Z-burst mechanism for existing EE cosmic ray data.

متن کاملNeutrino Interactions with Nuclei and Dark Matter
Even though the combined laboratory, astrophysical and cosmological evidence implies that neutrinos have masses, neutrinos provide only a small cosmic dark matter component. The study of solar neutrinos provides important information on nuclear processes inside the Sun as well as on matter densities. Moreover, supernova neutrinos provide sensitive probes for studying supernova explosions, neutr...
متن کاملPeV neutrinos observed by IceCube from cores of active galactic nuclei
Recently, the IceCube Collaboration has reported the first observation of cosmic 2 PeV energy neutrinos giving a signal 3 above the atmospheric background [1]. More recently, 18 events 4 above the expected atmospheric background were reported with energies above 100 TeV. These neutrinos are likely to be of cosmic origin; their angular distribution is consistent with isotropy. The average spectr...
متن کاملHidden Cosmic-Ray Accelerators as an Origin of TeV-PeV Cosmic Neutrinos.
The latest IceCube data suggest that the all-flavor cosmic neutrino flux may be as large as 10^{-7} GeV cm^{-2} s^{-1} sr^{-1} around 30 TeV. We show that, if sources of the TeV-PeV neutrinos are transparent to γ rays with respect to two-photon annihilation, strong tensions with the isotropic diffuse γ-ray background measured by Fermi are unavoidable, independently of the production mechanism....
متن کاملAre Diffuse High Energy Neutrinos from Starburst Galaxies Observable?
Loeb and Waxman have argued that high energy neutrinos from the decay of pions produced in interactions of cosmic rays with interstellar gas in starburst galaxies would be produced with a large enough flux to be observable. Their model is reexamined here and it is shown that the the neutrino flux from starburst galaxies, even given the various assumptions made by them, is more than an order of ...
